Project & foundation steps for children:
Eine Initiative von Dr. Michael Hoppe |
The Town Gobabis
Gobabis is situated 175 km east of the Windhoek airport and 100 km from the border of Botswana. It’s a city with about 30,000 inhabitants, 15,000 of whom are living in great poverty in iron shacks in the slums at the entrance to the city. The unemployment rate is at 85%, and there’s no running water or electricity. HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis are extremely widespread. Many children are not going to school at all or just for a short time. In winter, with temperatures down to -10°C, people in the slums, who are too weak to move, are dying.
How to get there
You would like to visit Namibia and maybe also the project of steps for children in Gobabis? There are direct flights a few times a week from Germany to Windhoek, with www.airberlin.de via Munich as well as with www.airnamibia.com from Frankfurt. For Air Namibia you can book cheaper through our cooperative partner Iwanowski’s Reisen www.afrika.de by mentioning steps for children. There you can book an inexpensive rental car or your complete trip with a discount.

There’s no public transport in Gobabis, only collective taxis. The best idea is to take a car there. It’s 175 km drive east from the airport, 100km from the border of Botswana. The drive takes you 1 ½ hours on a good paved road.
Accommodation
You can stay overnight in our comfortable round guest house in Gobabis. There are four double rooms – three with separate bathrooms, one with integrated bathroom. Each room is furnished with table, teakettle and cups, and there’s a fridge in the hallway. A small kitchen with stove and sink is planned. Cost is between N$ 150-300 (about 15-30 €) a night.
