Chicken Coop

Hühnerfamilie

Helping people to help themselves - with a chicken coop! This is how the Augsburg Friends of Namibia have provided a new income earning possibility for a family in Okakarara  with  many children , as well as contributing to steps for children`s  soup kitchen.

Guest House

Gästehaus

We have a new Guesthouse, only three steps away from steps for children in Okakarara. For little money you can have a nice stay in our self-catering house. Our guest house offers one double room with en suite bathroom. The other three twin rooms share a separate bathroom and shower. The rooms are let for N$ 150-300 (≈ € 15-30) per night.

Bicycle Sales & Workshop

Bike

Until the end 2008 we collected 300 used bicycles and spare parts in Germany through the support of Class 9a from “Schulzentrum Süd” in Norderstedt (near Hamburg) and their committed teacher Ulrike Hüls.

We sent the bikes and parts with a container to Namibia. In Okakarara we employed three additional workers and trained them as bicycle mechanics and in sales and marketing.

After School Care (steps Academy)

nachmittagsbetreuung

steps for children looks after 50 children in order to get them off the streets and to keep them busy in a meaningful way. Mostly orphans and other vulnerable children (OVCs = Orphans and other Vulnerable Children) have the opportunity to take part in the steps Academy on four days of the week.

Support of School Children

Schulkind

During the school year 2012 steps supports altogether 32 children in this social step who had visited the preschool in the previous years. Thanks to the help of many sponsors we pay the school fees for these children and provide them with the necessary books, exercise books, writing equipment and a warm meal each day in our soup kitchen.

Vegetable Garden

Gemüsegarten

The 30 ha plot for the olive plantation just outside of Okakarara is also used for growing vegetables. Between the olive trees which have to be watered anyway we plant cabbage, carrots, peas and other vegetables.

Olive Plantation

Olivenpflanze

When the olive trees will bear fruit in a few years time and the olives will be sold we will have reached our vision of financial independence for this project! About 8 km outside of Okakarara we have taken over a ca. 30 ha plot in the Waterberg Community (“Ongombombode” in Otjiherero) and planted 1,664 trees there in early 2009.

Computer School & Internet Café

PC-School

The Computer School & Internet Café is another income generating step in order to make the overall project independent of donations in the long run. In November 2007 we sent 30 used PCs with a container to Okakarara. Only 15 of them are connected, the others provide spare parts in case individual computers or parts are defect.

Sewing Workshop

Näh-und Handarbeitsraum

The Sewing Workshop is an income generating step which will help to make the overall project financially independent in the long run.

On three sewing machines and one embroidery machine three single mothers produce, for example, bags, aprons, runners or placemats, make school clothes and deliver other special orders.

Soup Kitchen

Soupkitchen

The Soup Kitchen is another social step.

Many children in Okakarara, but especially those catered for by the project do not get breakfast at home – or wherever they stay – and many of them also no regular warm meal.

Preschool

Vorschulkind

The preschool is a social step which serves the education and training of the children.

In 2006 we taught 30 children. 100 children between the ages of 5 to 7 come to the preschool 5 days a week since January 2011. There they learn and play together so that they are better prepared to start school the following year.
