What is special about steps for children

Kinder

Without our committment the children in our projects most likely would not get a school education and thus enter the usual cycle of poverty, alcohol and Aids. We want to offer the children the possibility of a better future where they will be in charge of their own lives and learn project management and entrepreneurial thinking and acting. However, they need more than food, clothes and shelter. They need an education which enables them to earn their own living.

Our projects are different from other aid projects for children due to the …

Income Generating Measures

Unique about steps for children are the income generating steps (units of the projects) which finance themselves while also contributing to the social steps which cater for the children and youths and the overall project. This way the project will become independent of donations and development aid. Sustainability, help to help oneself and professionalism are most important.

Examples for income generating steps are:

  • Sewing Workshop for several women
  • Computer School & Internet Café
  • Bicycle Sale & Workshop
  • Theatre
  • Guest House/Accommodation for visitors
  • Olive Plantation with 1,664 trees
  • Vegetable Garden

With these we finance the free assistance (social steps) for children and youths in need like, for example, at the project in Okakarara

Kinderschaukel

  • Preschool for about 60 children
  • Soup kitchen for about 60 children and about 15 staff
  • Extra classes for school learners
  • After School Care
  • School fees, school uniform and school books for 18 children in 2010
  • Volunteering in Okakarara/assistance in Germany
  • PC donation to Waterberg schools

Sustainability

With the income generating projects we lay the foundation that the projects initiated by us will become more and more independent of permanent outside funding. This way the project can stand on its own feet in the long run and will continue to exist when donations become less.

Help to Help Oneself

Each new unit/step of the project is developed, planned and carried out in cooperation with the members of the community and the local employees. Thus each step is practical experience in entrepreneurial thinking and acting and at the same time an opportunity for training in project management.

The children and young people are encouraged to initiate their own projects later on and in doing so to take their lives into their own hands.

Self-Initiative

We motivate teams of volunteers as well as employees to show self-initiatve and to proactively help develop the project. This way our development aid leads to self-determined activities rather than to passivity and acceptance of whatever happens.

step by step

Our projects start with one or two steps. They are modular projects which can grow further, step by step. However, a new step only begins when a previous step is running successfully and sustainably.

Transparency

We guarantee that 100% of your specific donation reach the project. We do without glossy broschures, costly advertising and external consultants. The initiator of the project, the founder Dr. Michael Hoppe, contributes to the project with his experience as entrepreneur free of charge.

The few costs for administration, advertising and travelling are paid from donations ascribed specificly to that purpose.

The board of the foundation and the supporting organisation in Germany and the members of the Boards of Trustees of the projects, many assistants and volunteers, the accountant and the trustee work on an honorary basis, which means the money goes directly to those who need it most.

The expenses are checked by a trustee audited by renowned accountant.

You are always welcome to visit the projects in order to see for yourself how the donations are applied.

Entrepreneurial Thinking

The initiator of the project, Dr. Michael Hoppe, worked as a self-employed entrepreneur for 30 years. During this time he initiated and counselled many projects and businesses and made them a success. This entrepreneurial experience flows into the project steps for children and benefits the local employees.
