This year, Namibia is suffering from a drought the likes of which has not been seen for a very long time. As is so often the case, this affects the weakest: children. We do our best to regularly provide warm meals to our steps children and, at two locations, to external children. in order to improve food security. We hope that you will support us with a donation.

The newly renovated apartment in Gobabis, which was completed within a few weeks, invites you to support us on site. This accommodation is now available to our volunteers so that all rooms in our steps guesthouse can be rented out to increase the occupancy of this income-generating step.
We would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your commitment and know that many of you are collecting donations without publicity and are involved in many different ways for steps. We would also like to introduce some supporters this time: A family that has been involved with steps for over 15 years and one of our valuable volunteers, whom we will introduce to you through our new section.

And again we have a nice message at the end of the newsletter.

Drought of historic proportions in Namibia – 1,4 million people in Namibia affected by acute food insecurity
Namibia is hit by a historic drought this yearcht. As one of the driest countries in sub-Saharan Africa, people struggle every year to find enough water and food. Even worse than before, because not only densely populated cities like Windhoek are particularly affected, but also in rural areas the water reserves are barely sufficient. Because there has been significantly less rain, maize, which is produced exclusively with rainwater, could not be harvested and pastures also offer significantly less biomass as a food source for animals in a drought. This is a serious problem, as these conditions lead to food insecurity and economic difficulties for farmers.
The crisis has affected all 14 regions of the country, with grain production down 53% compared to last year and water levels in dams down 70%. Vital farmland has dried up and livestock are no longer able to find water, leading to their deaths.
According to recent analyses of the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), approximately 1,4 million people, i.e. Almost half of the population is affected by acute food insecurity. This number has almost doubled since last year.
Through our soup kitchens we try the threat of malnutrition and regularly provide our steps children and, at two locations, external children with hot meals to ensure a healthy diet.

Support our soup kitchens now with a contribution of your choice and stop malnutrition.

Get involved in Gobabis – volunteers wanted
We have places available again in Gobabis for a Voluntary Social Year or a shorter volunteer stay – This is possible from 3 months onwards. There are many different opportunities for you to work, and above all, educational tasks await you: With the steps guardian angel children, you can carry out your own learning projects and games in the afternoons and help with homework. In addition to the obligatory homework, the guardian angel youngsters also do their exam preparation with us.
There may also be smaller office tasks that you can help with. Unlike your predecessors, you will no longer stay at the steps guesthouse during your time in Gobabis, but your own apartment designed especially for you on the steps site, near the informal settlements, relate.

Newly renovated accommodation in Gobabis for volunteers
In May of this year, the renovation of the accommodation for our volunteers could begin. It took a total of six weeks - and the result is impressive: a small, fine and cozy apartment has now been created. Of course, the former steps carpenters were involved in furnishing the apartment: beds, built-in wardrobes and...

Our volunteers deserve a medal - because without their tireless efforts, we as a small team would not be able to handle the ever-growing tasks so successfully. In this section, we would like to introduce you to our committed volunteers and show you how their efforts make a significant difference in the work of steps for children.

Nawka family: Your commitment makes a difference!
The Nawka family visited our steps location in Okakarara, Namibia, in September last year. But this was not their first visit: they visited steps in Okakarara in 2010, four years after the project was founded. And at that time, when Britta was pregnant with Hannah, her extraordinary commitment to supporting disadvantaged children began. In addition to getting to know the steps work, playing sports and playing with the children, they conducted training on the subject of AIDS.
A few years later they were there again – this time together with their then young daughter Hannah, who is now the youngest member of the support association steps for children eV.
In addition, Stani Nawka provides used books for patients in the waiting room of his practice, which are available for voluntary donations. He recently set up a stand with materials and a donation box for steps at a local festival and collected numerous donations. They were also allowed to set up a donation box for change in a local kiosk. It's amazing: the box has to be emptied every month because it is always full to the brim.
Dear Nawka family, we would like to thank you very much for your commitment and your unwavering loyalty to steps and our mission! Your dedication inspires not only us, but also many others to actively campaign for children's rights and to improve their future prospects.

Together we create lasting changes in the lives of disadvantaged children and young people in southern Africa – on their way to overcoming poverty!
