Off to Zimbabwe
After four years, the board was able to travel to Zimbabwe again and visit the projects that were created through the collaboration with Plan International and Stiftung Hilfe mit Plan. Due to the tight time frame, they mainly looked at the income-generating measures. Michael Hoppe and Andreas Roß were fascinated by the progress and successes of the project so far:
"We were impressed by the tireless efforts of the local people in Zimbabwe. They successfully adapted the fish ponds and even created more ponds after the funding was completed in order to be able to provide for themselves. This form of income-generating measures enables a long-term source of income for the participating community and helps to reduce abject poverty."
People in the country are dependent on autonomous farming opportunities as inflation has risen tremendously. Therefore, we are grateful that our efforts, such as promoting autonomous farming opportunities, can directly contribute to improving local living conditions. Our goal is to provide people with the necessary resources and skills to become independent of external sources of aid and instead help people to help themselves. By empowering local communities and promoting sustainable practices, we help people to become self-sufficient and to be resilient against the effects of inflation in the long term. Our collective efforts are crucial to bring about lasting positive change for the people in the country.
We are continuing to work in Zimbabwe in cooperation with Plan International and Stiftung Hilfe mit Plan, which now has three locations in rural regions. Our focus is now on protecting girls and young women in order to prevent early marriage. We will also continue to support projects such as additional schools and fish ponds this year.
How we are currently helping in Zimbabwe:
- Training for teachers and headteachers to teach sexuality education
- Youth education through sport, theatre and music: The sense of community and the commitment of young people to young people are strengthened, and there is also discussion and education about sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR)
- Trained local community leaders on child marriage legislation, child protection and access to education
- Involvement of political decision-makers and traditional authorities in the form of political dialogues
- Leadership qualities of young women are promoted
- Provision of professional start-up kits for young people
