Hello to Namibia!

steps volunteers answer questions about their stay and the activities in our facilities in Namibia. Look forward to it!

Hello, my name is Anette and I have been at steps for children at the Okakarara location since mid-August.

Why did you decide to spend a social year in Namibia?

Since I first heard about the possibility in the 9th grade YSF It was always a wish and somehow a dream of mine to do an FSJ. Through mine I was then introduced to the sending organization Volunta, Namibia and steps in Okakarara and the decision was made relatively quickly for me.

Are there any tasks that you particularly like at steps?

I especially like the art classes. Seeing the smile on the children's faces when they have successfully completed their rattle or butterfly is simply priceless. Then there's always a high-five and they run back to class. After the art lesson you can always be sure that you have made at least one child happy.

What has been particularly challenging on your journey so far?

I found it difficult not to put too much pressure on myself. It just takes time to arrive, to feel comfortable or to meet new people. I had to be very patient with myself and be careful not to stress myself out so much.

What surprised you most about your stay?

Actually the openness of people. We were greeted, spoken to and welcomed very quickly both in the project and in the village. Especially in the choir, everyone was happy when we joined and it's just nice to see how quickly you get along so well with the people here.

How do you like to spend the evenings after your work at steps?

After work, living in a shared apartment is usually the order of the day. We cook together, continue watching our series or do some yoga and Pilates. We always have choir rehearsals in the afternoon on Fridays and Saturdays, which is always great fun!

What are you grateful for?

I am grateful to be here. I've only been here a month and I'm already so happy to have taken the chance to compete this year. The experiences and moments that you have here are just a little wow moment every time and I can already notice how I am changing here.

What do you have to try when you're in Namibia?

Taxi driving! The taxi drivers here have a completely different pace and a new story is always emerging. Simply an experience in itself.

I wish…

...that this year continues just as well as it started so far. I'm looking forward to having lots of new experiences - whether in a project or while traveling.

Dear Anette, we are pleased that you have joined the volunteer and staff team at steps for children and wish you continued enjoyment in your tasks. Thank you very much for your support!
