Happy vegetables are asking for help with the sale
The vegetable garden at this location in the immediate vicinity of our preschools has previously supplied the soup kitchens there with vegetables. The vegetables were only sold if there was a short-term surplus of one type of vegetable. Setbacks in agriculture, as many certainly know, are not uncommon. The extremely dry air, the drought of recent years as well as heat and frost affected the olive trees that were planted severely, so that no yield could be seen. Some of the fruitless olive trees can be sold through a tree nursery, the remaining ones are to serve as shade providers in the future.
Growing success of vegetable growing
Since February this year, steps Okakarara has been working with a new, currently volunteer vegetable growing consultant who has very good knowledge. With its help, in addition to supplying your own soup kitchen to regularly deliver vegetables such as carrots, cabbage, onions, tomatoes, beetroot, spinach / Swiss chard as well as melon, pumpkin or sweet potatoes to customers. The cultivation of these varieties is successful because they can cope with the extreme weather conditions and - and this is an important factor for the successful sale of the vegetables - they are eaten by the local population.
Customers would be school canteens in Okakarara 8 km away or the street and market sales in the next largest city Otjiwarongo, 100 km away. In the immediate vicinity of the garden, there are hardly any customers except occasionally passing customers.
In the absence of public transport, the transportation of vegetables between the garden and the points of sale is hardly practicable, which is why we would like to purchase a pick-up for this purpose, which serves both for transport and as a sales area.
