Hello from Namibia!<\/h2>\n

Pauline says hello from Namibia! Since August 2022 she has come to us for a year via the weltw\u00e4rts programme from volunta gGmbH to Namibia<\/a> arrived, to care for children and young people there with great commitment at steps Okakarara. Pauline tells us about her first tasks and experiences here:\u00a0<\/p>\n

I am Pauline and have been a volunteer at steps for children in Okakarara since August. I have various tasks in the project in Okakarara.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

In the morning, before breakfast, I do sport every day with one of the five kindergarten and preschool groups. After breakfast, there is art for one group or Mousebook in the preschool. My fellow volunteers and I have divided these tasks among us according to the day of the week. In addition to the kindergarten, there are also income-generating steps. These include in Okakarara the guesthouse<\/a>, the sewing workshop and the garden. On Mondays, after breakfast, I drive to the garden in Ongombombonde to collect vegetables for the soup kitchen in the project. In the afternoon, After School Care takes place for the Schutzengel children. Here I supervise the 5th to 7th graders with their homework. Once that is done, we play games together.<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\"\"\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n

I would not have expected beforehand that I would adapt so quickly to the daily routine and that the Otjiherero language would be so relevant.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

I particularly like the varied tasks in the project.<\/strong> I work with children of various age groups and also get to contribute in the steps garden and at the guesthouse. The garden is a few kilometres away from Okakarara and is more like a small field. The green plants in particular provide a lovely contrast to the sand that otherwise surrounds me here. That is why the garden is one of my favourite places in the project. <\/strong>I also like that we volunteers have tasks that are clearly assigned to us, but within the task we are given a great deal of freedom ourselves, for example when designing sport or art lessons.<\/p>\n

I was surprised by how quickly I learned many different new things, for example driving on the left or thinking up exercises for sport. I would not have expected beforehand that I would adapt so quickly to the daily routine and that the Otjiherero language would be so relevant.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Most kindergarten children speak very little English, which is why I quickly learned a few words.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

I was particularly pleased by how warmly I was welcomed by my colleagues. I am happy here in Okakarara and very excited about what else awaits me during my time at steps for children.<\/p>\n
