Through my sending organisation Volunta, Namibia and steps in Okakarara were then introduced to me and the decision was made relatively quickly for me.

Are there any tasks that you particularly like at steps?

I especially like the art lessons. Seeing the smile on the children’s faces when they successfully finish making their rattle or butterfly is simply priceless. Then there’s always a high-five and they run back to class. After the art lesson, you can always be sure that at least one child has been made happy.

What has been particularly challenging on your journey so far?

I found it difficult not to put too much pressure on myself. It simply takes time until you arrive, feel at home or get to know new people. I had to be very patient with myself and make sure not to stress myself out too much.

What surprised you the most during your stay?

What was actually the openness of the people. We were welcomed, spoken to and accepted very quickly both in the project and in the village. Especially in the choir, everyone was delighted when we joined in, and it’s simply lovely to see how quickly you get on so well with the people here.

What is your favourite way to spend the evenings after your work at steps?

After work, it’s usually shared-house life. We cook together, continue watching our series, or do some yoga and Pilates. On Fridays and Saturdays we always have choir rehearsals in the afternoon, which is always great fun!

What are you grateful for?

I am grateful that I am allowed to be here. I’ve only been here for a month and I’m already so glad that I took the opportunity to come for this year. The experiences and moments you have here are simply a little wow moment every time, and I can already notice how I’m changing here myself.

What should you definitely try when you are in Namibia?

Taking taxis! The taxi drivers have a completely different pace here and there’s always a new story unfolding. Simply an experience in itself.

I wish...

... that this year continues just as well as it has begun so far. I’m looking forward to having lots of new experiences — whether in the project or while travelling.

Dear Anette, we’re delighted that you have arrived at steps for children as part of the team of volunteers and staff, and we wish you continued joy in your tasks.
