Trade fair? What? If you’re asking yourself that question too, you’re not the only ones. We reacted the same way when we heard about it for the first time. Although Trade Fair is well known throughout Namibia, which is why our guesthouse has been fully booked for a long time! Here’s the explanation:

Trade Fair can be thought of as a fair that lasts a whole week (Monday-Sunday). It takes place in Okakarara at the Trade-Fair-Center, this year from 5-11 September. Namibia also has several other such Trade Fairs; they take place at different times and sometimes have a different name. Many ministries and companies come to this fair to present themselves and advertise, but also many private individuals who want to trade their own goods. They either have a place in the hall or in the outdoor area, which is also quite large. There is also a kind of small farmers’ market where cows, goats and sheep are sold and 2 camels can be admired. Outside there are also quite a few stalls selling toys, a bouncy castle,.

Comparable to a trade fair in Germany, of course, it is not the same size, but here on site it is a huge event. People have even travelled from Kenya to sell their jewellery and bags here.

So that the children of steps wouldn’t miss this spectacle either, we went on an outing there on Thursday. On foot, it is about half an hour to the Trade fair-Center. With 70-80 children, all smartly dressed in the steps outfit, it naturally took a little while until we got there, but they were really well-behaved and caused very little fuss.

Once there, we looked at a large part of the hall, including stuffed animals such as lions, cheetahs and jackals, we were shown a new idea of electricity and the children admired the camels. After that, everyone was allowed onto the bouncy castle one after another.

After almost everything had been discovered and tried out, there was lunch in the form of a picnic on the grandstand. That brought our outing to an end, because 4 hours had already passed.

After the weekend, Okakarara slowly calms down again too. People go home again, the stalls are taken down and normality slowly returns.
