As a volunteer in Gobabis: A completely normal week (1)

A perfectly normal week

[:en]

The volunteers Janna, Barbara, Lisa and Carolin have already got quite a lot going at the project site in Gobabis Namibia have already got quite a lot going. In the last trimester of the school year, they support the teaching team energetically and, in their report, it becomes clear how much heart and enjoyment they bring to the task:

„In the final sprint, we support the teachers by taking small learning groups of 5–10 pupils out of the classes and doing extra exercises with them. We deepen reading, writing and arithmetic through various games and materials. The children challenge us to make the lessons varied and it is not all that uncommon for us to rediscover games from our childhood. Games such as hopscotch, „Who’s afraid of the black man“, which we then renamed „Who is afraid of the Marshmallowman“ ;), and fishing for words are very popular with the children here. Crayons always go down well with the children, because they love drawing for all they’re worth; besides, all kinds of crafts are always welcome.

After the shared lunch, the afternoon kids, pupils from the surrounding schools, come, where they receive homework help and food. We experience the following scenes every day: „Do your homework“ – „I don´t have“ or „Can you show me your exercise book.“ – „I don´t have.“ Because we are prepared for these situations, we have prepared additional tasks. After an hour of hard work, all the children have earned their lunch.

First lesson, four clicking sounds of the Khoekhoegowab language, we failed, but still had a lot of fun. Meanwhile, we were being watched and had to put up with a lot of mockery and derision. Nevertheless, we will not be put off, because only then can we communicate better with the kids. […]
