A perfectly normal week

The volunteers Janna, Barbara, Lisa and Carolin have already accomplished quite a lot at the project site Gobabis in Namibia . In the last trimester of the school year, they actively support the teaching team, and their report makes it clear how much heart and fun they put into their work:
„In the final sprint, we support the teachers by taking small learning groups of 5–10 pupils out of the classes and doing extra exercises with them. We deepen reading, writing and arithmetic through various games and materials. The children challenge us to make the lessons varied and it is not all that uncommon for us to rediscover games from our childhood. Games such as hopscotch, „Who’s afraid of the black man“, which we then renamed „Who is afraid of the Marshmallowman“ ;), and fishing for words are very popular with the children here. Crayons always go down well with the children, because they love drawing for all they’re worth; besides, all kinds of crafts are always welcome.
After sharing lunch, the afternoon kids arrive, students from the surrounding schools who receive homework help and food here. The following scenes happen every day: “Do your homework” – “I don’t have one” or “Can you show me your exercise book?” – “I don’t have one.” Since we are prepared for these situations, we have prepared additional tasks. After an hour of hard work, all the children have earned their lunch.
After the afternoon class, Tuesdays are for clicking—not on the computer, but in a beginner Damara course for steps volunteers with Mrs. Santiago. First lesson: four click sounds from the Khoekhoegowab language—we failed, but still had a lot of fun. Meanwhile, we were watched and had to endure a great deal of ridicule and derision. Nevertheless, we will not let that discourage us, because that is the only way we can communicate better with the kids. […]
