Half a year does the trick

When Dominik arrived in Namibia, it was school holidays there. So there was enough time to settle in and get to know the project. “At the beginning of the regular school term, we had the opportunity to take a look at the other areas. Together with the project leaders, a plan was developed so that we could take turns accompanying different teachers during lessons,” Dominik reports. In Gobabis, communication (morning lessons for the little ones) presents every volunteer with a challenge due to the more than 6 different tribal languages that the children bring with them into the project.

After this period of exploration, we could choose where we wanted to work in the mornings.” Dominik chose the carpentry workshop and, together with Romario and other carpenters, finds creative solutions here, some of which were required due to a shortage of materials. His own projects in the carpentry workshop, such as building picture frames, as well as making furniture, gave him great pleasure. For the afternoons, after an induction period, Dominik was given his own tutoring students from the group of guardian angel children and could thus work intensively with them to prepare for upcoming tests and exams.

His summary:
“I really had many opportunities to contribute my strengths to the various areas of the project. I experienced and learned a lot, made friends and also believe, or hope, that I have left my mark on the project.”
