Where there was recently red earth

Where recently there was red earth…

…the maize is now growing wonderfully!

Where recently there was red earth, the maize is now growing wonderfully. Here, the so-called 90-day maize is being grown and can soon be harvested. This is due, among other things, to the good weather conditions that currently prevail in Namibia.

In Ongombombonde, a small village close to our Okakarara site, we have a vegetable garden. Here, besides maize, all kinds of other vegetables grow. Chilli plants, peppers, cabbage and beetroot in particular thrive well in Namibian soil. The rainy season over the past few weeks has helped the vegetables and, above all, the maize, which was sown not too long ago, to grow to half height already.

Ongombombonde and the 90-day maize

Here in Ongombombonde the so-called 90-day maize is planted. It can also be grown without irrigation. However, if it does not actually rain, the yield is very low and can sometimes fail completely.

In 2020, after several years of severe drought, the country was able to recover somewhat thanks to the rain. This has of course also done the garden and the vegetable harvest in our income-generating step „Vegetable growing“ a lot of good.
