Where recently there was red earth, the maize is now growing wonderfully. Here, the so-called 90-day maize is being grown and can soon be harvested. This is due, among other things, to the good weather conditions that currently prevail in Namibia.

In Ongombombonde, a small village very close to our location in Okakarara, we have a vegetable garden. Alongside maize, all sorts of other vegetables grow here. Chili plants, bell peppers, cabbage and beetroot in particular thrive well in Namibian soil. The rain in recent weeks has contributed to the vegetables and especially the maize, which was sown not too long ago, now already reaching half its full height. 

Ongombombonde and the 90-day maize

Here in Ongombombonde the so-called 90-day maize is planted. It can also be grown without irrigation. But if it actually does not rain, the yield is very low and can sometimes fail entirely. 

In 2020, after several years of severe drought, the country was finally able to recover somewhat thanks to the rain. This has of course also been good for the garden and the vegetable harvest in our income-generating step “Vegetable cultivation.”
