Teachers in Namibia
The school grades of students at state schools in Namibia are rather poor – this is also due to the inadequate training of teachers. steps addresses the problem by providing further training for kindergarten teachers and preschool teachers through recognised educational institutions.
Education and training are not yet given particularly high priority by many people in Namibia. On the one hand, this is because parents themselves were barely able to receive a school education and no one took care of it – particularly among the rural population. On the other hand, career prospects in the country are also very limited, even with solid training or a degree.
Teachers at state schools in Namibia sometimes teach subjects that they themselves do not fully master – as a result, children and young people have very poor chances of achieving a school-leaving qualification without additional school-accompanying support at other institutions, as steps for children makes possible at various locations in Namibia.
“There are sometimes extreme situations in which teachers at state schools teach English without properly mastering the language themselves. The test results for the students are accordingly poor,” says Ulrike Mai, National Coordinator Team.

In order to enable children and young people to achieve their school-leaving qualification and to support them continuously, we regularly train our educators and preschool teachers at external educational institutions such as NAMCOL (Namibian College of Open Learning), IOL (Institut of Open Learning) or the Headstart Montessori Teacher Training College. These further training courses are state-recognised.
