Teachers in Namibia
Students’ grades at state schools in Namibia are rather poor – this is also due to the unsound training of teachers. steps tackles the problem by providing further training for nursery teachers and preschool teachers through recognised educational institutions.
Education and training does not yet hold a particularly high status for many people in Namibia many places. One reason for this is that parents themselves were hardly able to enjoy any schooling of their own and nobody took care of it – especially among the rural population. Another is that the career prospects in the country are very limited, even with a solid education or a degree.
Teachers at state schools in Namibia sometimes teach subjects they themselves do not fully master – so children and young people have very poor chances of achieving a school-leaving qualification without additional school-accompanying support in other institutions, such as steps for children enables at various locations in Namibia.
„There are sometimes extreme situations in which teachers in state schools teach English without properly mastering the language themselves. The test results for the pupils are correspondingly poor,“, says Ulrike Mai, National Coordinator Team.

In order to enable children and young people to achieve their school-leaving qualification and to support them continuously, we regularly train our educators and preschool teachers at external educational institutions such as NAMCOL (Namibian College of Open Learning), IOL (Institut of Open Learning) or the Headstart Montessori Teacher Training College. These further training courses are state-recognised.
Good reasons for further training:
The further training courses cost per person, depending on the year of training and the institute
between €500 and €2,500 per year.
