A sewing machine for the sewing room

Sewing machine arrives in Namibia

Recently, a sewing machine from Hamburg reached the steps sewing workshop in Okakarara! – together with our dedicated volunteer and former volunteer Lisa Bartels. This meant the sewing machine could be safely transported in an available space in the suitcase. That was a perfect fit. In Windhoek, it was then received and, organized by our National Coordinator Team, transported to Okakarara.

Now even more bags in different sizes and patterns can be made. And some of these sewn products can also be purchased in Germany. These can be purchased, for example, at our events in Hamburg: ALAFIA and at the upcoming members' event of the support association steps for children e.V. in October.

Where did the sewing machine come from?

In December 2022, Ms Gudrun Lehwark-Yvetotb got in touch with the steps for children foundation in Hamburg. She had travelled extensively in Namibia professionally in the past and now as an SES-expert, and had learned about steps for children in Namibia and the steps sewing workshop in Okakarara through an acquaintance. She regularly meets with her volunteer handicrafts group from Wohnungsgenossenschaft 1904 e.V. in Hamburg-Eimsbüttel to sew, crochet and knit together. The proceeds from the products benefit charitable causes – most recently, this enabled them to collect three well-preserved electric sewing machines, the first of which is now proving very useful to our project in Okakarara in the sewing workshop.

The sewing machine was received in wintry Okakarara by Office Manager Eveline Ketjivandje.

Samueline Katupose is now sewing in the steps sewing room.

The first sewing machine has reached its destination – two more are still in the office and waiting for a free space in the suitcase of travellers to Namibia.

If you also have the opportunity and wish to support us with a transport and will soon be travelling from Hamburg to Namibia, please feel free to contact us at info@stepsforchildren.de
