steps student Regina reports on her second internship in Rundu, Namibia
I greet all donors, supporters and team leaders of the steps students!
„I'm so excited to be able to share my experiences from my second internship with you once again.“
I was in the city of Rundu for my internship from 10 June to 26 July 2024, Namibia, I was placed in both the clinic and the hospital to explore and adapt to a new learning environment, interact with patients from different cultures as a nurse, understand different communication barriers and learn more nursing skills in different wards at Rundu Intermediate Hospital compared to my previous internship at Gobabis State Hospital.
I worked in different departments, units and wards, acquired different knowledge and learnt more about what it means to work as a nurse. But there is one particular experience that I had during this internship that is very interesting:
„The feeling of being fulfilled at the end of the shift.“
The best experience in nursing is not a specific experience, but a kind of overall feeling. It's just a feeling at the end of every shift - maybe not every shift, because some shifts can be really emotionally challenging and very draining - but after most shifts I come home and feel like I made a difference today by doing one little thing for a patient that changed their life, even though it was just a little thing. It made him feel more comfortable and made his hospital stay more enjoyable.
Of course, there are bigger things that you do for people that are actually life-saving, but I think it's not just about saving lives. It's also just about doing the little things for patients that make their hospital stay a bit better and more positive than if I hadn't been there.
Knowing that you have made a difference to someone's day, month, year or life is an incredible feeling because every day you walk into the hospital you are in control of whether or not you have a real positive impact on some of those lives.
This is an incredible thing AND very valuable for a patient's well-being. Sometimes variety plays a huge role in the health of our patients: A patient who smiles every day and has no stress recovers faster, I would say, to be honest!
Of course, I still have a year of my nursing training ahead of me, in which I hope to gain a lot more experience and grow even more into the certified midwife and nurse I want to become.
I hope this inspires all my fellow steps for children who choose the same career as me to set out and make someone's day better because they feel so much better and you feel good too.
Thank you so much, steps for children, for having my back by funding my transport, accommodation, pocket money and tuition fees and playing a big role in my school and professional life in the absence of both my parents!!!! God will bless the project twice over so that I will never want for anything!!!
