steps student Regina: Internship report from Namibia

steps student Regina reports on her second internship in Rundu, Namibia

I greet all donors, supporters and team leaders of the steps students!

“I am so excited to be able to share my experiences from my second internship with you once again.”

From June 10 to July 26, 2024, I was based in the city of Rundu, Namibia, for my internship, working both in the clinic and in the hospital to explore and adapt to a new learning environment, come into contact with patients from different cultures as a nurse, understand various communication barriers, and learn more nursing skills on different wards of Rundu Intermediate Hospital – compared to my previous internship at Gobabis State Hospital.

I worked in different departments, units and wards, acquired different knowledge and learnt more about what it means to work as a nurse. But there is one particular experience that I had during this internship that is very interesting:

“The feeling of being fulfilled at the end of a shift.”

The best experience in nursing is not one particular experience, but rather a general feeling. It is simply a feeling at the end of every shift – perhaps not every shift, because some shifts can be truly emotionally challenging and very exhausting – but after most shifts I come home feeling that I made a difference today by doing one small thing for a patient that changed their life, even though it was only something minor. It made them feel more comfortable and made their hospital stay more pleasant.

Of course, there are bigger things that you do for people that are actually life-saving, but I think it's not just about saving lives. It's also just about doing the little things for patients that make their hospital stay a bit better and more positive than if I hadn't been there.

Knowing that you have made a difference to someone's day, month, year or life is an incredible feeling because every day you walk into the hospital you are in control of whether or not you have a real positive impact on some of those lives.

This is an incredible thing AND very valuable for a patient's well-being. Sometimes variety plays a huge role in the health of our patients: A patient who smiles every day and has no stress recovers faster, I would say, to be honest!

Of course, I still have a year of my nursing training ahead of me, in which I hope to gain a lot more experience and grow even more into the certified midwife and nurse I want to become.

I hope this inspires all my fellow steps for children students who choose the same profession as me to set out on their journey and make someone’s day better, because it makes them feel so much better and you feel good too.

Thank you very much, steps for children, for supporting me by funding my transportation, accommodation, pocket money and tuition fees, and for playing such a major role in my school and professional life in the absence of both my parents!!! God will bless the project twice over so that it will never lack anything!!!
