Antonia in Namibia

Wide landscapes, warm encounters and valuable experiences: Antonia is currently volunteering in Okakarara, Namibia, and supporting steps for children. In her report, she рассказывает how her day-to-day life there looks, what tasks she takes on and what particularly moves her about working with the children and young people.

1. Who are you?

Hi, I'm Toni. I'm 18 and come from Hamburg. I finished my A-levels this year and have been here in Okakarara since 1.10. At home I do a lot of music and have also brought my instrument here.

2. Why did you decide on a short-term volunteer placement in Namibia?

I decided on a short-term volunteer placement in Namibia because I love working with children. I got to know Steps through my school and I find Namibia really exciting, also because of its history. I didn't have to think about it for long 😉

3. Which books, documentaries, films or other contributions did you prepare with for your time in Namibia?

I mainly prepared for Namibia with podcasts and a travel guide. I also studied colonialism in Namibia quite extensively at school.

4. Are there tasks at steps that you particularly enjoy?

I love PE! It's so much fun playing with the kids and doing obstacle courses! And I really like being in the ECD! Being with the little ones always does me good and is super cute!

5. What has been particularly challenging on your trip or during your stay so far?

Fridays are particularly challenging for me. Since not so many children come then and there isn't so much to do, they always drag on a bit.

6. Is there a special encounter or story that has stayed in your memory?

We were in Windhoek one weekend and met Gladys there. She has her own organisation in Ghana and was a very special and inspiring woman.

7. Which skills or knowledge have you been able to develop or improve during your stay so far?

I think I have become more patient and more relaxed. But you have to be, too, when 5 children are crawling all over you at the same time 🙂

8. What are your plans after your FSJ in Namibia ends?

After Namibia I will start studying viola in Lübeck in the summer semester. After that, we'll see. I think it will go in the direction of school music.

9. What has surprised you the most about your stay so far?

The friendliness and openness of the people. Everyone here is super nice and friendly. Since Okakarara isn't very big either, everyone here knows each other and that creates a really family-like atmosphere.

10. What absolutely must you try when you are in Namibia?

Fatcakes, so good!

11. What are you grateful for?

For the openness we are shown here!

12. I wish...

... that the work here can continue to be sustained and that the project even grows bigger, so that even more children can be supported!

Dear Antonia, we are delighted that you are supporting us so actively in Namibia and have found your way to steps. Many heartfelt thanks for your wonderful commitment and all the best for the rest of your time there!

Have you already heard about the volunteers’ campaign?

With a lot of heart and initiative, our four volunteers are currently committed to supporting children and young people at steps in Okakarara. They not only help in everyday life on site, but also have their own Fundraising campaign started - to be able to achieve even more.
