In the midday heat, I make my way to Arweso’s home. Arweso is seven years old and lives with his mother, his siblings and his aunt in the slum area of Rehoboth. The family lives without electricity or running water in their corrugated-iron hut, and as no one has a job, there is usually no money for food either.

Arweso belongs to the Guardian Angel children we newly added to our programme in Rehoboth at the beginning of January. In the morning, he attends first grade at the state primary school. Now we walk together to our partner project „Otto Gamseb“. On the way to the afternoon care, he tells me that he likes maths and football and would like to become a police officer one day.

When Arweso and the other Guardian Angel children arrive at the project, they first get a warm meal. It is hard to learn on an empty stomach, and most of the time it is the only meal of the day! After plenty of time on the swings, they go to Eveline Boois in the classroom. Homework is on the agenda, and the teacher supports the children with patience and loving care. Arweso especially needs help with reading, as he grew up speaking Damara and now goes to a school where Afrikaans is taught.
Eveline describes Arweso as a thoughtful but open boy. He likes being at „Otto Gamseb“ much more than being at home, and is very eager to learn. The teacher is convinced that, with continuous support, he will successfully find his way.
We want to support children like Arweso with our Guardian Angel programme and help them realise their dreams, for example by becoming a police officer.

By now, steps for children supports former steps preschool children at four locations on their way through school education. We are very pleased that many of these schoolchildren are accompanied year after year through long-term sponsorships. For 2016, Guardian Angels are still missing for around 40 children. In addition to school uniforms and books, the programme also includes funding a daily warm meal and educational support in the afternoon care.
Become a Guardian Angel and support a schoolchild for 1 year with 192 euros.
