The Holiday Club in Gobabis is entering its second week. Here’s a current insight into all that the volunteers are putting together:
„Not only in Germany is „upcycling“ a trend, in Gobabis too at Holiday Club #2 „rubbish“ was transformed into imaginative dragons, stylish milk-carton wallets, papier-mâché hot-air balloons and Christmas cards with motifs from used tea bags. The motivated 3-15-year-olds not only surprised us with their creativity, but also delighted us, as it became clear that the months of collecting all kinds of plastic and paper packaging had paid off.

Given the large number, it is repeatedly apparent that the children become restless when the materials are distributed, because they evidently fear missing out. On the other hand, we also observe care, especially for the younger children, and a sense of fairness when it comes to distributing food and drink. To further strengthen the sense of community, we have planned a team treasure hunt with experiential-learning games for next week. In addition, the (pre-Christmas) crafting will not be neglected: cardboard cars for the little ones, rattles (for Jingle Bells see below), tin-can angels, footprint Christmas trees, straw stars and a final picture with homemade picture frames are on the programme.

We are curious to see how the number of participants develops in the final week of Holiday Club. Starting with 37 children on the first day, we are now at a minimum of 60 children in the morning for the first game. The 100 mark had already been surpassed several times by lunchtime.

In the afternoon, some angelic voices still feel like rehearsing the carol singing for next week. The highlight for the kids is the lively Jingle Bells, which the children sing out loud with exuberant energy, despite the lack of snowfall in Namibia. Alongside that, the classic Silent Night in English and Afrikaans must not be missing, nor a Christmas carol in their native language, Khoekhoegowab.
This year, the holiday programme has put us in a completely different Christmas mood.
We wish you a Merry Christmas and all the best for the New Year 2016!“
