Experiences of a Volunteer

[:en]

Our volunteers in Namibia regularly report on their experiences from the projects. Since early February, the trained preschool teacher Christina Gintenstorfer has been supporting the kindergarten and after-school care in Okakarara. Over the two weeks of active involvement in the project, Christina has already experienced a great deal:

„With a Namibian colleague, I supervise a group. There are various topics (e.g. My body), which we then work on with the children. Besides that, there is of course plenty of time for painting, reading, singing and playing. In the afternoon, I support a second volunteer in the ‚Afterschool care‘ for 11-15 year olds. My focus here is on in-depth English lessons. Twice a week, I also offer evening English lessons for the steps staff.“

Even though communication with the children is initially unfamiliar and difficult because their mother tongue is mostly Otjiherero, Christina does not give in: „I manage with hand gestures.“ The volunteer knows that this commitment is worthwhile despite all the effort: „I can definitely see that help is needed and that I am needed!“
