As there are fewer and fewer children at the end of the school year, because many parents take their children to the villages early for the holidays, our graduation celebration took place on Thursday, 19 November. In the run-up, there was a lot to organise: each child was given a little bag with pencils, writing utensils, a toothbrush and toothpaste, a flannel, small gifts and sweets, which we all had to fill. Because, owing to the loss of our office assistant, some things could only be done at the last minute, this presented us with considerable challenges, which we were able to overcome, thanks to our great improvisational skills, more or less on time and with everyone pulling together.
At the beginning of the day, all the children sang together, including the steps song („We are the learners of steps for children, we give thanks to the Lord, to steps for children…“). After that, the individual kindergarten groups performed something as well. After a speech by the mayor, it was then time for our play, which Judith and Kathi had rehearsed over the previous weeks together with Ulli. Michael Steinbach built the stage for us.
The play is called „Handa’s Surprise“ and is about a girl who walks to her friend with seven fruits on her head to surprise her. On the way, seven animals (monkey, elephant, zebra, antelope, ostrich, giraffe, bird) steal the fruit from the basket without her noticing. In the end, thanks to a chance encounter with a wild goat, hundreds of mandarins end up in the basket („Uuh tangerines, my favourite fruit!“). The kiddies were all super excited. The performance went brilliantly apart from a few tiny details, and everyone had fun.
After the play came the real part, for which the preschool children put on red and yellow capes and even graduation hats. Everyone received an official certificate of school readiness, one of the bags described above, and their folder with pictures and worksheets from the whole preschool year. The kindergarten children and even the crèche children also received bags or a little surprise. Then it was off on holiday for everyone!
