Today, 15 October, marks the eighth International Handwashing Day, established by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Since a large proportion of all infectious diseases are transmitted through the hands, on this day in particular the WHO is calling on people to wash their hands with soap for at least 30 seconds, especially before and after eating and after using the toilet. Institutions such as kindergartens, schools, nursing homes and hospitals are particularly targeted by this day and its message. For the children in the various steps projects, washing their hands before and after eating in the soup kitchen is also part of their daily ritual and is especially important there, because according to UNICEF, around 3.5 million children worldwide die each year from diarrhoeal or respiratory diseases. The countries most affected are in Africa and South Asia.
