Happy vegetables ask for help with sales
The vegetable garden at this location in the immediate vicinity of our preschools has so far supplied the soup kitchens there with vegetables. Only when there was a short-term surplus of a particular type of vegetable was the produce additionally sold. Setbacks in agriculture, as many are certainly aware, are not uncommon. The extremely dry air, the drought of recent years and heat and frost took a heavy toll on the olive trees that were planted, so that no yield was visible. The unproductive olive trees can partly be sold via a nursery; the ones left over are intended to serve as shade providers in future.

Growing success in vegetable cultivation
Since February this year, steps Okakarara has been working with a new, currently volunteer consultant in vegetable cultivation who has very good knowledge. With his help, it may be possible, in addition to supplying our own soup kitchens to regularly deliver vegetables such as carrots, cabbage, onions, tomatoes, beetroot, spinach/swiss chard as well as melon, pumpkin or sweet potatoes to customers. Growing these varieties is successful because they cope with the extreme weather conditions and are – and this is an important factor for the successful sale of the vegetables – eaten by the local population.
Potential buyers would be school canteens in Okakarara, 8 km away, or street and market sales in the next larger town of Otjiwarongo, 100 km away. In the immediate vicinity of the garden there is hardly any customer base apart from customers passing by occasionally.
As there is a lack of public transport, transporting the vegetables between the garden and the sales points is hardly feasible, which is why we would like to acquire a pick-up for this purpose, which serves both as transport and as a sales area.
