Holiday Club in Gobabis

[:en]

The holidays are now almost over and in Gobabis the ‚Holiday Club‘ organised by our new volunteers and some teachers is coming to an end. Svenja, Barbara, Janna and Lisa have spent every day playing, doing crafts and sports with enthusiastic teachers and up to 80 children. Here they report on their impressions and experiences:

Games, fun and action at the Light for the Children School ‚Holiday Club‘! Under this motto, our holiday programme has been running for a week and a half now. We started with 30 children, one teacher and the two of us volunteers. Every day the number of children increased; at the moment, an average of 80 enthusiastic children come along. Not only the children, but also the volunteers have grown in number. For a few days now, we have had support from two Weltwärts volunteers. Under a bright blue sky, we start every morning at half past eight with warm-up games, such as the Gordian knot (which actually works even with 50 children). At 9 o’clock, the welcome, loud singing and the morning prayer take place. Afterwards there are various creative activities, from peg animals, balloon squishy faces, friendship bracelets, cardboard-plate elephants and photo stories to Namibia quizzes and homemade puzzles. After that, everyone lets off steam with all kinds of running, racing, catching and ball games. We are amazed and delighted that all the children, from toddlers to teenagers, get excited about every game and every activity: the older ones help the younger ones and are incredibly open and receptive to children’s games. At the end of the day, all the children get lunch.

One day was under the heading ‚team building‘. The task was to cross a rushing river full of crocodiles as a team. Another challenge was to reach the safe shore on a melting ice floe. It was noticeable that the children needed some time to get used to this kind of experiential educational game and to bring the whole team, rather than small individual groups, to the finish.
At the end of the week, the Olympic Games took place. The children were divided into small groups and strengthened their team spirit loudly with an individual battle cry (‚Cheetahs win, Cheetahs win‘ or ‚Roar, lion, roar‘). They had the following disciplines to master: throwing, sprint, bottle bowling, wheelbarrow race, three-legged race and water balloon run. Finally, there was an award ceremony with homemade medals and an apple for everyone as a prize.

We really enjoy planning and running the holiday programme, and we gladly take on the challenge of adapting our ideas to the large number of participants. We are grateful for Santiago’s enthusiastic commitment (teacher at LftC), who supports us in implementing the holiday programme not only with his translation but also with his assertiveness. Without him and the helping hands in the kitchen, the ‚Holiday Club‘ would be unthinkable. And that would be a pity not just for us…
