International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, 2021

Here in the video, Michael Hoppe speaks with some Schutzengel children in Okakarara. The children ask whether people in Germany also argue and tell how they witness fights and violence every day. One of the girls reports that there are men who rape young girls. The other girls unanimously agree with her. It is unfortunately not surprising that the girls report something like this, because:In Namibia, 1 in 3 women experiences violence, and every third woman in Namibia has already experienced sexual violence. The children in the steps projects are also partially exposed to this situation unfortunately. In the steps Boys and Girls Clubs in Gobabis, Namibia, the children can talk about their experiences of violence in a safe place. The steps staff here and in the other projects are their trusted contacts. They accompany the girls to the doctor or talk with them about sexual health. The boys are also educated here in the Boys Club about AIDS and the use of condoms. The children learn how to avoid or defuse dangerous situations and what to do if someone does get hurt. In Zimbabwe, together with the Stiftung Hilfe mit Plan and Plan International, we are committed to specifically empowering young girls and women. The measures include:

  • Access to quality education and vocational training
  • Career counseling and mentoring program
  • Training on sexual and reproductive rights
  • Involving parents in educational work and nutrition programmes
  • Implementation of psychosocial first aid measures as well as training and sensitisation campaigns on child protection and the sexual and reproductive rights of girls and boys for teachers and community members
