Doro and Leonie are the new weltwärts volunteers in Okakarara and have been involved in the project since mid-August. Here they report on what their week is like:

This week sports was, of course, on the morning agenda again and today there were really many children (almost 40). After our usual start (running around the house, balancing, jumping, circle) we sang a few songs. We started with „If you’re happy and you know it clap your hands“ and many others such as the „steps-song“ and the Namibian national anthem. That was huge fun; the children love singing and don’t want to stop. The teachers from steps joined in enthusiastically too, so we had a great start to the morning!

In the afternoon there was AfterSchoolCare again. After we had done the homework with the kids, we went with some of them to Marlene in the art room and did crafts and drawings. This week was all about elephants. Marlene gave us detailed instructions on how to draw elephants, and then we coloured them with charcoal and cut them out.

Every day at the end of the afternoon activities there is the cookie round. Each child is asked a question, and if they answer it correctly, they get a cookie. Since the children really struggle with their times tables (even in 7th grade!) it is usually small maths problems, but English translations or general knowledge (e.g. the capital of Namibia) are also asked.
The children are really sweet and you instantly take them to heart, even if they are sometimes a little cheeky. But they are children after all! 🙂
