The eleven children of the Tiger group from the Kita Himmelblau, Duvenstedter Markt, set out on 10 March on the long way to the steps office in Markusstraße, accompanied by their carers Birgit Eckert, Tina Vonderheiden-Klinger and Marc Görlitz. They were carrying an important gift. Together with the adults, they counted the contents of the donation tin, which, to everyone’s great amazement, yielded 320 euros. But what filled it so well?
Birgit Eckert, a multiplier and active volunteer at the steps for children foundation, has been successfully helping for two years to make the steps projects and her personal commitment to children in need in Namibia known at the nursery. „The children and carers of the Tiger group also wanted to contribute something to help the children in Namibia. Tina’s sewing skills offered a great way to raise money. So Tina sewed various animal models and the children could choose one. Then it was time to get started… The animals had to be filled with magic wadding and decorated according to their own ideas. There were no limits to creativity!
And so many different and wonderful cuddly toys were created. Then we invited the parents of our group to the „vernissage of the cuddly toys“ with coffee and refreshments. This gave them the opportunity to exchange ideas and, of course, to redeem the animals created by their children. The parents gave what they deemed appropriate and what the first sewing attempt of their child was worth to them.“
The steps team sends a huge thank you to the Tiger group and to the parents and carers of Kita Himmelblau! And we say a very special THANK YOU, Birgit Eckert! But also have a good trip! Because next week it’s off to Okakarara. Birgit is not a woman for fundraising alone; she has to get actively involved on site – with the children and for the children. The little „tigers“ are already very excited. Their eyes and hearts can hardly take it all in. They will look forward to Birgit’s return and then be even closer to the steps children in Namibia.
