30 November 2018

To finish, there was hopping, dancing, singing and laughing

In the last week before the holidays, not only did the annual closing celebration take place in Okakarara, but there was also team building with the staff and children. So, on my project trip, I was able to play sack races, blind man’s bluff and musical chairs, throw tins and much more. This was organised by the volunteers Anna Fink, Nele Greitenevert, Selma Korbach and Emily Kuhl. The four were also active for the closing celebration: they painted animal posters for a small play based on the book „From Head to Toe“ and practised diligently with the pre-school classes and the other groups for their performances. On 23 November, the hall was then packed: alongside parents, grandparents and siblings, the representative of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare, Alexia Tjimbundu, also showed enthusiasm for the event.

Muhupe Ocean Kuvare, the former manager of the computer school in Okakarara, hosted the programme for the 10th time with lots of music, dancing and excited children. 17 girls and boys from the toddler group, 88 nursery children and 79 pre-school pupils received their lever arch files with their worksheets and pictures, as well as a Progress Report. The pre-school children were also presented with a Gratulation Certificate as they leave. In January, they will move on to Year 1 of primary school. Six of them will be newly admitted to the Schutzengel programme and will therefore again be looked after in the afternoons in the steps project and supported with their schoolwork in 2019.

The closing celebration ended with filled rolls, an apple and drinks for everyone, and all the children went home with small gifts. An eventful year is drawing to a close.
