Our volunteer Doreen has been active in Gobabis for 2 months and has already experienced many things in the steps project. One of the most extraordinary activities was probably the “beauty contest”.
Doreen says: “The search was on for ‘Miss Summer’ and ‘Miss Light 2014’. It was a huge event: The hall was festively decorated, there was a lot of practice, and of course the children looked great. The boys danced between the rounds of ‘casual wear’, ‘summer wear’ and ‘evening dress’. It was a real celebration and the audience was thrilled!”
In addition to such events, Doreen is also involved in the day-to-day activities of steps. “I spend most of my time working with the steps homes. Together with Maureen and Mr. Bartmann, we visit the families and have many conversations. Interpersonal relationships are the most important thing in this work, and Maureen and Mr. Bartmann are a great team in this respect. Last week, we invited all the families to spend a morning together. We sang, prayed, had breakfast and played together. We had an incredible amount of fun, and even created some works of art. For next month, we are planning a meeting just for the parents, to hold a kind of parents’ evening where they can exchange ideas with one another. And we want to celebrate Christmas a little with the children (after that, there will be a long holiday here). The project is also getting into the Christmas spirit. We sing Christmas carols together and are making the first Christmas decorations. At the moment, we are mainly making hearts for the windows and Christmas cards.”
Of course, there is never a shortage of play and learning during the wide range of activities… Many thanks to Doreen for her first 2 active months in Gobabis. We are just as excited as Doreen to see what happens next: “There is still so much to tell about the project, even though I still have a long time ahead of me. I’m looking forward to it!”
