While we are enjoying summer with pleasant temperatures, winter has set in in Namibia. Last week, the region around Windhoek in particular was affected by the first real cold front of the year, with temperatures as low as -15°C below zero. We received word from Gobabis of -11°C. The cold especially affects the residents of the townships, who sleep without blankets on only thin mats. It is not uncommon for the elderly and the sick to freeze to death in the cardboard and corrugated-iron huts, and the children also suffer greatly from the situation.
