Blowing eggs out and then painting them? Not every child knows that, which is why our volunteers, Katharina and Sophia, introduced this tradition in Okakarara:

“We organized a small Easter party in Okakarara with some of our afternoon children (classes 4+5). We wanted to bring a little German tradition to Namibia, so we bought eggs, carefully poked two holes in them, and then blew vigorously until the eggs were empty! The children were all doing this for the first time, and Emilly, our colleague, was initially a little puzzled by the procedure.

Gradually, however, everyone understood the principle and really mastered it quite well for their first time. Of course, many eggs broke, much to the kids’ disappointment, but we had enough replacements. In the end, everyone had a nice egg to paint—with acrylic and watercolors! Those who had already finished could color Easter pictures with colored pencils that we had previously found on Google. At the very end, we cooked the blown-out egg mixture as scrambled eggs and ended the day with a shared meal.

Everyone had a lot of fun!”
