weltwärts to Gobabis
Hannah Russ from Hesse has been volunteering at our Gobabis location through the BMZ’s weltwärst programme since August 2017, together with Lasse Schneider from Düsseldorf.
She also made friends among the children and young people in the after-school club, where she and Lasse gave homework help or maths and English tutoring.
However, Hannah not only got to know the project partner “Light for the Children”’s kindergarten, preschool and afternoon care well, but also steps’ income-generating projects: the computer school, guest house and carpentry workshop. She has been working intensively in the latter since October. Her previous experience from holiday jobs at a carpentry workshop proved very useful to her.

She took part in making toys, such as building blocks, which she sold with other volunteers at various markets in Gobabis. This allowed her to make her very own contribution to steps’ special approach: generating additional income to finance steps’ social initiatives. In addition, together with Lasse, she built a cupboard for the steps partner project in Otavi.
Advertising for the guest house was also one of her tasks. “We are given a great deal of trust”, said Hannah. And last but not least, Hannah and Lasse were able to give free rein to their creativity by painting a classroom.
“You learn to become more independent and take initiative in Gobabis,” Hannah concludes. “I hope that other steps volunteers will also be able to gain similar experiences in the future and support the project both professionally and mentally! In Gobabis, everyone is always most welcome!”
