Selma is looking for a guardian angel

Selma is looking for a guardian angel

Find out here who Selma is and how you can help her and other children.

Selma comes from a small impoverished area in Rehoboth, Namibia. Here, the six-year-old nursery school pupil lives with her mother and her four younger siblings in a small corrugated iron hut, without running water or electricity. Four months ago Selma's father suddenly died. Since then, Selma's mother has been trying to keep the family afloat with occasional work in other households. But due to the even greater unemployment caused by the coronavirus, it is becoming more and more difficult to find work. The little Selma has been attending the steps nursery school for 2 years in Rehoboth. Here at nursery school, together with around 80 other children, she is prepared for school. In addition, there is a warm meal every day in the steps soup kitchen. Since her father's death, Selma has been coming to school less and less often because she has to look after her younger siblings and keep the household in order when her mother has work. The steps nursery school teachers are worried and sad at the same time, because Selma was a motivated pupil, she was popular and had many friends there. Next year, Selma was due to start Year 1. However, her mother has already said that she cannot afford the costs. Selma needs a guardian angel to make it possible for her to attend school.A guardian angel covers the school fees and the cost of schoolbooks, provides a warm meal a day and the school uniform. This is a huge financial relief for mothers like Selma's (who cannot afford these expenses and therefore often have to take their children out of school). Even if Selma's mother cannot find work, Selma should still be able to start Year 1. With a guardian angel, she has the chance of regular schooling in the future and may even be able to take A-levels one day, as others before her with guardian angels have done. With just €1 a day you can become a guardian angel now and help Selma and other children in a similar situation in the long term, because education is the way out of the cycle of poverty.
