Selma is looking for a guardian angel

Selma comes from a small slum in Rehoboth, Namibia. Here, the six-year-old preschooler lives with her mother and her four younger siblings in a small corrugated-iron shack, without running water and without electricity. Four months ago, Selma’s father suddenly died. Since then, Selma’s mother has been trying to support the family with odd jobs in other households. But due to the even higher unemployment caused by the coronavirus, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find work. Little Selma has been attending the steps preschool in Rehoboth for 2 years. Here at the preschool, she is prepared for school together with approximately 80 other children. Every day, there is also a hot meal at the steps soup kitchen. Since her father’s death, Selma has been coming to school less and less often because she has to look after her younger siblings and keep the household in order when her mother has work. The steps preschool teachers are worried and sad at the same time, because Selma was a motivated student, was popular and had many friends there. Next year, Selma was supposed to start first grade. But her mother has already said that she cannot afford the costs. To make it possible for Selma to attend school, she needs a guardian angel.A guardian angel covers the school costs and expenses for schoolbooks, provides a hot meal a day and a school uniform. This is an enormous financial relief for mothers like Selma’s (who cannot afford these expenses and therefore often have to take their children out of school).  Even if Selma’s mother cannot find work, Selma should still be able to start first grade. With a guardian angel, she has the chance to attend school regularly in the future and perhaps even graduate from secondary school one day, like other guardian angel children before her. With just 1 € per day, you can become a guardian angel now and help Selma and other children in a similar situation in the long term, because education is the way out of the cycle of poverty.
