Selma is looking for a guardian angel

Selma is looking for a guardian angel

Find out here who Selma is and how you can help her and other children.

Selma comes from a small impoverished neighborhood in Rehoboth, Namibia. Here, the six-year-old preschooler lives with her mother and her four younger siblings in a small corrugated iron hut, without running water or electricity. Four months ago, Selma’s father suddenly died. Since then, Selma’s mother has been trying to keep the family afloat with odd jobs in other households. But due to the even higher unemployment caused by the coronavirus pandemic, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find work. Little Selma has been attending the steps preschool in Rehoboth for two years. Here at the preschool, she is prepared for school together with around 80 other children. There is also a hot meal every day at the steps soup kitchen. Since her father’s death, Selma has been attending school less and less often because she has to look after her younger siblings and keep the household in order when her mother has work. The steps preschool teachers are concerned and saddened at the same time, because Selma was a motivated student, was popular and had many friends there. Next year, Selma should start first grade. But her mother has already said that she cannot afford the costs. To make it possible for Selma to attend school, she needs a Guardian Angel.A Guardian Angel covers the school fees and the cost of schoolbooks, provides a hot meal each day and a school uniform. This is an enormous financial relief for mothers like Selma’s, who cannot afford these expenses and therefore often have to take their children out of school.  Even if Selma’s mother cannot find work, Selma should still be able to start first grade. With a Guardian Angel, she has the chance to attend school regularly in the future and may perhaps even complete her Abitur one day, just like other Guardian Angels before her. For just €1 per day, you can become a Guardian Angel now and provide long-term support for Selma and other children in a similar situation, because education is the way out of the cycle of poverty.
